Christmas presents background, red, gold, close up

I’m walking down the streets of Lagos and I can’t help but wonder how life moves so fast. How did we get here?

One minute, I was the one expecting gifts from my Uncles and Aunties in December and in another, I’m now the Auntie everyone is expecting gifts from. Why would my nieces and nephews be saying “Auntie, buy me an iPad,” How much is my salary?

If, like me, you don’t want to exit your family WhatsApp group every December or switch off your phone like a fugitive, come close, let me help you. Don’t expect any gifts o, I’m only here to help with ideas.

We all know how bad the current economy is, so I took the liberty of listing gift ideas according to how much you’re willing to spend. These are some low and high-budget gifts you can give your loved ones this Christmas.

For Guys

If you have been thinking of gift items to buy for your friend/family that is a guy, I have a few ideas:

  • Brand New Tyres: There’s no Nigerian man who wouldn’t appreciate a new set of tyres as a gift. He’ll thank you from now till December next year, trust me.
  • Fuel/Diesel: Have you seen the price of fuel today? 10 litres of fuel is a big deal for anyone right now, not to mention car owners who have to buy it constantly.
  • Leather Shoes and Belts: Well-crafted leather belts with reversible logos will always be a hit coupled with red bottoms leather shoes.
  • Great Perfumes: You know what they say about perfumes – “The best investment in every man’s life is an expensive cologne.”
  • Socks: This is a no-brainer. It always comes in handy, no matter how cheap or expensive.
  • Shirts: Good shirts are a thing for men, whether it’s a designer shirt or vintage shirt, you will win a bros heart with one.
  • Caps: It doesn’t have to be a designer brand, just get a gray, brown, black or red cap and you are good to go.
  • Nice Office Ties: If he’s a 9-5er, this always works. Look out for great designs in regular colors like blue, black, red, pink, etc, so that the tie isn’t just nice but functional
  • Pyjamas: Only a few guys have proper nightwear, most of them wear their tattered singlets and boxers to bed. You can help them get a  lifestyle change this Christmas by giving them really nice sleepwear.

For Ladies

Okurrrr! Time for the ladies, so please pay attention! If you’re feeling generous, you can start with:

  • Mobile devices: An iPhone 15 or anything close to it, is a great gift choice.
  • Human hair: Ladies love their wigs sleek and long. It’s a new love language for females.
  • Gold Accessories: Pure gold necklaces, earrings, knuckle rings, ankle chains, costumes, the list is endless.
  • Fancy footwear: You can get beautiful slippers, sandals, shoes, etc for your girlfriend(s).
  • Shopping vouchers: If you can’t make up your mind on the exact gift to buy for your female friend, you could just get a pre-loaded shopping voucher, this way, your friend gets to buy what they really want and still remember you fondly whenever they see/use that item.
  • Designer bags: You already know the big names(Balenciaga, Saint Laurent, Ralph Lauren, Hermes, etc ), help yourself to one within your budget and get your loved one blown away!
  • Fabric: Getting fabrics for females who are advanced in age (moms and aunts) is always a win.
  • Food: It’s high time we incorporated food into the class of love languages and treated it with the respect it deserves. All I’m saying is that, if your friend is a foodie, you can either take them out to a nice restaurant or order a banging meal and have it delivered to them.

For Kids

Children can be very bold. If you let them, they will request a private jet and 10,000 sports bicycles. However, they can be sweet and easy to “bargain with” if you know your way around. If you don’t want to start googling loan apps by January, buy them:

  • Clothes: Make sure you buy clothes that are at least one size bigger than their current size, their Nigerian moms will thank you for it.
  • Toy cars: Boys love cars at any age! You can’t go wrong with them.
  • Confectionery:  Every child has a sweet tooth and would love you more for indulging them. If you’re gunning for the favorite Uncle/Auntie of the year, here’s your chance.
  • Balloons: Fancy balloons and kids are buddies, especially when it’s attached to a line. You’ll score extra points if the balloon comes customized with their names.
  • Trip to the amusement park: Find out the happening amusement parks in your city and give them a treat at any one within your budget.
  • Games: Board games (Scrabble, Monopoly, Chess, etc), video game consoles (PS games, Xbox) and PC games, are some of the items you can buy for kids this Christmas.
  • iPads and Phones: This is the way to go if you’re looking to score points with your crush by being extremely generous with her little relatives. All the best!
  • Bicycles:  Bicycles with flashy colors, lights and loud horns are a favorite for children.
  • Books: This isn’t a popular option but a great gift choice for kids who love to read and you’ve got a wide variety to choose from. Fictional storybooks are an all-time favorite.
